Can we just start using computer strike zones?

The instant replay system in the MLB is a joke. It's all half-assed and thrown out there without forethought.

The problem with replay is it involves one or two jackasses in New York who only start to play back the tapes after the managers have wasted a ton of time hemming and hawing before finally asking the umps to ask a review.

There needs to be an a video umpire on each umpiring crew dedicated to watching the game on monitors. They need to be actually watching every moment of the game in real time, same as any other umpire. If there is a blatantly bad call that can be seen on TV, the video umpire need to be able to radio down to the umpires on the field unprompted and fix the call on the spot. Even in the case of requested replays that are too close to call at first glance, the turnaround time between a requested replay and a judgment would also be much quicker if the video ump has been watching the game and is aware of the situation already.

Having machines call balls and strikes is a different issue completely. The latter wouldn't even require any human judgment call whatsoever. Electronic strike zone could be done with much higher precision than the FoxTrax stuff by placing a high speed camera directly above the plate, then one at waist level to the left, and to the right of the plate (both to judge the height relative to the stance of the batter, and to judge checked swings)
