Worst Case Replay Scenario

Recommended Posts

I think call on field stands would be better, as your version would benefit the defense through replay. They would get the tag out and an impossible force out. And the call on the tag influences the throw even going home, so it's impossible to assume what would have happened.

I think if it affects the player's decisions later in the play then it shouldn't be reviewable, but that would be hard to put into writing. So in this case they could still review whether the guy was safe on the out at home, but not the tag.

There was nothing to challenge at home, the ball beat the runner for a force out. The umpires defended the run being allowed as they said a tag would have been nearly impossible to do. Melvin's complain was that had the call been made correctly on the field (runner tagged for second out) the first baseman would have never thrown home, he would have flipped to first to get the third out and end the inning, so debating about tags being possible at home was nonsensical.

In that case leaving it as force out at home, 2 outs probably would have been the cleanest thing to do. Only problem with that as a general rule though is you'll have managers wanting clearly bad calls to stand by arguing it was unreviewable as they *might* have been able to turn a double play, or their runners might have done something differently.

What about replaying the at bat if there is no clear resolution?

Voiding the play is probably a better thing than just making up impossible outcomes out of thin air.

The player's responsibility is to act on the ump's call, not the possibility of an overturn. Much like with interference calls the ump would probably have the discretion to call Wong out and return the runner to third.

That said, the best play would have been for Albert to throw to the plate and get the force there to begin a 3-2-3 DP.
