Pirates Designate Jose Tabata For Assignment

Aside from messing up Max's perfect game I don't know much about him. Looks like he has good avg and good on base skills and no power. Is he fast? Can he play good D? Might be a good LF lead off type guy, thoughts?

You wouldn't be saying that if you saw what people on here had to say about Iannetta and, indirectly, Scioscia and Dipoto earlier this year.

Do you know if he can steal bases or how his defense is?

 

Metrics indicate his defense is average in LF and slightly below average in CF and RF.  The eye test indicates he's adequate at all three.  He makes tons of contact, hits for a high average and yes, he can steal some bases.  Whether or not Mike Scioscia would let him is another thing entirely.  The Angels are a station to station team and that's all on Scioscia. 

 

Honestly, Tabata makes sense and is about as good as Ben Revere.  If the Angels can get him for free, they should do it.  Heck, they may even want to offer something up so that he isn't claimed by anyone else on waivers.  Maybe see if the Pirates are interested in a Tabata-Grant Green swap or something.

He has 47 stolen bases in parts of six seasons in the majors, was 1-for-1 in attempts this year in 41 plate appearances in 27 games. Not exactly a stolen base machine.

He's only owed 4.5 million for next year.  After that, he has a 6.5 million dollar option of a 250k buyout.  That's pretty cheap, especially for a guy with past success and numbers in his youth as he has.

Wasn't that contract and the buyout guaranteed paid by the Pirates when they took him off the 40 man roster last year? 

 

Not sure people would really want to see Tabata in Anaheim..  He's an exteme ground ball hitter and he's no longer fast -- but if he can be plucked off the discard pile for next to nothing he's worth at least looking at.
