Ignorance of scientific fact is definitely on full display. Assemblywoman Michelle Fiore (R-NV) dropped the following jewel into a discussion on end-of-life care:

“If you have cancer, which I believe is a fungus, and we can put a pic line into your body and we’re flushing with, say, salt water, sodium cardonate, through that line and flushing out the fungus. These are some procedures that are not FDA-approved in America that are very inexpensive, cost-effective.”

To start with, "sodium cardonate" doesn't exist. Cancer is an overgrowth of mutated cells, not a fungus that can be "flushed out". Of course, this is the same person who stated in a debate over a bill to allow concealed carry on Nevada college campuses, â€œIf these young, hot little girls on campus have a firearm, I wonder how many men will want to assault them. The sexual assaults that are occurring would go down once these sexual predators get a bullet in their head.”

Term limits is by far what needs to happen and even before that do we give some of these people any kind of psychological evaluation.

One problem has been that term limits open the door for people like this to seek, and win, office. When the economy went in the tank in Nevada, several experienced legislators who could have dealt with the problem more expediently were barred from seeking re-election due to term limits. We wound up with quite a few greenhorns who spent time learning how the system worked rather than addressing real problems.

Term limits are not a panacea. In many cases they are only a crutch for the party who can't win elections or beat a particular candidate.

Speaking of psychological evaluations, check out the saga of former Assemblyman Steven Brooks (D-North Las Vegas). He threatened to kill an Assemblywoman, was caught trying to buy a rifle at a Reno sporting goods store and was arrested trying to sneak into the State Capitol after being banned prior to his expulsion from the State Assembly (the only time that has ever happened in state history). Shortly after being expelled he was stopped by the Barstow PD and they had to use a taser on him when he resisted arrest.

Las Vegas Review-Journal articles on Steven Brooks - and this isn't all of it
