Trout on AL leaderboard for every significant offensive stat (Yes, more Troutporn)

Recommended Posts

If he keeps this up and keeps climbing up other War stats, he should be a serious contender for the MVP, even though his team sucks

He will finish second but the only chance he has is if Cabrera really struggles down the stretch or he gets injured.

He is already going through some injury issues so it's possible.

It would also help if Trout can pass up Cabrera and win the batting title.

Trout has a huge advantage in WAR again over everybody else.

I could care less if Cabrera's team is better, it's pure BS that Trout won't win again. Maybe we should start a new trophy called best player on the best team so Cabrera can win that while Trout gets what he deserves.

The first player since Bonds to put up back to back 10 WAR seasons and no MVP's to show for it. F the baseball voters.

Trout's slash line since May 1: .355/.455/.623

Ridiculous.

Trout compares very favorably to Miguel Cabrera in that time frame. He has more hits (114 to 104), more runs (68 to 54), more extra-base hits (46 to 43) and a few more walks.

He has played 7 more games than Cabrera since May 1st. Where he lags is in HR and RBI.

Cabrera's line since May 1st:  .360/.461/.702

All that said, I was surprised to find that there's one obscure Fangraphs statistic for which Trout is worst in the league. Its called "Clutch" and it measures a players performance in high leverage situations vs. his normal performance. Of 85 qualifying AL players, Trout is #85 at -2.34.

You know, its been kind of irking me for awhile - that it seems that Trout has performed particularly poorly in high leverage situations this year. Seems like the numbers bear this out.

Fangraphs' "clutch" stat compares a player against himself. So if Trout's OBP is .450 in high-leverage situations (which I would say isn't too shabby) he is declared "not clutch" because his normal OBP is the same.

That said, his -2.3 "clutch" reading shows the need for improvement.

According to baseball-reference, Trout's OPS:

Low Leverage: 1.083

Medium Leverage: 1.052

High Leverage: .658

There again the stats are hiding the truth IMO. His OBP in those same situations is .463, .402, and .365. What's killing Trout's OPS in high leverage situations is his slugging % of .293 (compared to .621 and .649 in the other situations.) In a high leverage situation, it seems as if Trout is changing his approach and taking singles to extend the inning and get on base. I don't mind this approach (if this really is the case) and I also would bet he improves on this with time.
