Why aren't we talking more about signing Hector Neris? 71 appearances, 1.71 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 77 K's in 68.2 IP for the Astros.

Neris' 28.0% hard hit rate was a career-best and -16.7 percent difference from 2022's career-worst mark. This correlated with an 86.5 mph average exit velocity allowed that was in the top 9% of the league. Neris also had the highest WPA for a non-closer at 3.82, which was tied for 5th overall among qualified relievers.

Thoughts?

I think people may view his ERA last year as a fluke, his walk rate was a little wonky and he velocity dipped a wee bit.  He was kind of effectively wild last season, those guys can be especially volatile.  But mostly I think he may be pricing himself out of people's plans -- dude opted out of a 8.5 mil option year and was reportedly asking for 7-11 mil per for 1-2 years.

So, does all this money to the pen mean:

- We're going all in! Let's sign Belli and Snell!

- We're cheaping out on the rotation (Lorenzen or comparable) and masking it with a high end bullpen (hopefully).

- Arte is worried about long-term contracts with the tv money in jeopardy post 2023 so he's spending money...but not on long term deals.
