Why can't we have a bullpen like the Cardinals?

If 2 players (Ryan Madson and Sean Burnett) had been healthy we might very well have had a dominant bullpen. But, unfortunately, they haven't been. Imagine Frieri in the 7th, Burnett in the 8th and Madson as a closer. Downs as a lefty specialist and Jepsen and Kohn as flamethrowers coming in as needed.   Richards/Williams as long relief and mop up and you have a first class pen. Best laid plans, etc....

A healthy Madson and Burnett would make this bullpen very very good. Finding guys like De La Rosa are important because it gives you more options and he's done pretty well.

For all the people ripping Dipoto for not addressing the bullpen, many conveniently forget the injury situation. We have had significant pieces gone for prolonged periods of time in the bullpen. With all of them healthy and active, a much different story.
