Gameday Thread (6/14/23): Angels @ Rangers

Since Neto has been so hot for about a month and Ward hasn't, I would put Neto at leadoff, shuffle Ward down to 7th and put Rengifo at 9th. That is not much of a change but enough that the guy with the hottest bat is getting more plate appearances instead of the fewest.

Three things Detmers has to do tonight, or the Rangers are going to feast on him.

1. Keep guys from getting into scoring position.

2. Why? Teams are batting .340 against him with RISP. .360 with RISP and 2 outs.

3. Don't face guys a third time!!! Opposing hitters are batting .512 against him the third time they face him in a game. Yes, over .500!!! with an OPS of 1.271. When he's been allowed to pitch after the 5th inning, he has given up a .667 batting average, and a 1.673 OPS!!! I knew it was bad, but that's beyond horrible. Let him pitch 5 innings and get him the Hell out of there unless the Angels have at least a 6 run lead. Even then, still get him out of there. lol

Any pitcher worth shit is facing batters the third time around. Detmers should become that guy one day. I doubt it is today but one way to get close to that without going over the pitch limit is not extend any count to 3-2. Take care of business early in the count, don't waste pitches so far outside the zone that Fletcher would watch it go by and rely on the defense to take care of anything that comes off a bat. 6 innings isn't hard to accomplish if you throw strikes early in the count and make the batter take action instead of waiting out a ball four.

He is better than that and needs to bear down the third time through, maybe mix up his pitches cleverly or set the hitters up with tempo.   It is probably becoming a mental block which he is capable of grinding through.   If his pitch count is low, I think they let him have at it.

Something has changed dramatically from last season. Last year he was holding batters to a .156 average with RISP and 2 outs. So, obviously, he has the ability to be dominant in clutch situations. To go from .156 to .360 is shocking though.

Third time through the lineup opponents only had an OPS of .587 last season. They've more than doubled that this season.

Sixth inning last year OPS of .619. This season they've almost tripled that. Hopefully, they can figure out tonight, and going forward, what he was doing so right last season that he's doing so wrong this season.

One thing they've learned about Fletcher is nobody is going to claim him this season because of the money that's left on that contract. So, they can basically bring him up, and send him down as often as they want to except they have to clear a spot on the 40 man roster for him. If someone does claim him, fine that's money they can spend elsewhere.

Bring back Fletcher and send down Walsh.  Drury becomes primary 1b.

Trout is totally lost.

Not even close to superstar Trout days!

Bat speed looks fine, he just has a giant hole in his swing... i.e. his uppercut swing is more uppercutty.  He has no chance on fastballs up in the zone.
