RIP Tim McCarver

McCarver was one of my early childhood heroes in baseball. My father was a huge Cardinals fan, and the first World Series that I watched was 1964, Cardinals-Yankees. McCarver won Game 5 in New York with a three-run homer in the top of the tenth. McCarver batted .478 in the series, with a double, triple and home run among his 11 hits. I was bummed when he was traded to the Phillies. As a broadcaster he was a bit polarizing, and sometimes his drop-ins were redundant or meaningless, but overall he did a decent job. Another piece of my past gone. RIP.

McCarver called Spiezio's home run in Game 6 in that epic at-bat. He kept getting pitches off the plate and fouling them off, then McCarver said "Down and in and it's 5-3"  Then the pitch came down and in.

he did the same exact thing for luis gonzalez's series winning hit of rivera in game 7 the year before.

He also pretty much called Luis Gonzalez's game winning RBI single for Arizona off Mariano Rivera in the 2001 World Series. He talked about left handed hitters hitting broken bat bloopers to left off Rivera, and that is almost exactly what happened on the next pitch. Just high enough to clear Derek Jeter's glove.
