Rumor Squashed Angels won’t trade Shohei to Dodgers

Angels aren't going to trade him. They'll let him walk after the season and get their comp pick and screw themselves.
But let's have fun and say they did...... Do you like these packages they listed?

To LAD: RHP/DH Shohei Ohtani
To LAA: RHP Dustin May, C Diego Cartaya, 2B Michael Busch, RHP Gavin Stone, OF Andy Pages, OF James Outman

OR

Dodgers get: Shohei Ohtani, Anthony Rendon + $18 million per season for the rest of Rendon’s contract (through 2026).
Angels get: Dustin May, Gavin Lux, Edwin Rios, Bobby Miller, Diego Cartaya, Landon Knack, Miguel Vargas, Andy Pages, James Outman, Jorbit Vivas.

One would have to imagine the amount of players swapped would assume that Ohtani immediately signs a long term deal with the Dodgers.

This would be very tempting.

Maybe instead of asking for players back we just give them Ohtani, Trout, Rendon and Stassi. Then we have an even cleaner slate for the next owner, who will come in with a $3 billion investment and virtually zero payroll commitments.

No one wants Stassi.

Gotta include Loup and Tepera and fletcher as well.  We could get payroll down to 27m with no future obligations.

"now batting cleanup, david fletcher, first base. . . and catcher . . . and centerfield . . ."

For the Dodgers, it makes more sense going for Judge now. Then see what happens with their team for the first part of 2023. By the trade deadline the pennant race should have taken shape and they can reassess their needs.

If Ohtani would be a critical need at that point they could come in with a trade offer. But they will be competing with other teams, so the offer would have to be overwhelming. They do have a lot of young talent however and from their perspective those assets would be a price worth paying to insure a likely pennant and better World Series odds.

On the other hand, they could wait till next off-season and outbid everyone else. But how they do in 2023 will factor in. The landscape may have changed by then for both teams.

Also, a trade likely  gives Ohtani a taste of playoff experience and possibly a comfort level making him more likely to sign long term with the Dodgers. Especially if he likes living in SoCal and stay there.

And if Judge does sign with the Dodgers Ohtani may be tempted to join this Superstar mix, ala the NBA.

The Dodgers would have to do a lot payroll juggling and roster tinkering, but I think they will be very aggressive. Getting knocked out early by the Padres must sting.

For the Angels,  all they can do is try to be as competitive as possible and at least show Ohtani what a winning team is like. A tall order for one year, but not unrealistic if everything finally meshes.

As the season progresses discussions probably will be held between the Angels and Ohtani's management. And who even knows who ownership will be and what their plan is. So a hell of a lot of moving parts.
