Wow... that's a lot of names.  How many spots are available on the 40 man roster?

Currently, none.  They're at 40, plus 5 guys who are on the 60-day IL, but don't count for the 40-man total.  After the season is over, they have to add back those 5 guys--but then 4 guys currently on the 40-man are headed to free agency (Bradley, Duffy, Lorenzen, Suzuki (retiring)).  So they'll still need to drop one more player who's currently on the 40-man just to create the space for the 60-day IL guys.

Then at some point not longer after that, they'll have to make the decision about which of the guys listed in the first post they want to protect--so they'd need to cut more guys currently on the 40-man.

There's a decent amount of fat they could cut (e.g., Weiss, Zastryzny, Jhonathan Diaz, etc.), so I don't think it'll be a huge issue if they do want to protect a few guys like Adams and Jackson.

Who would you add to the 40 man, and who do you fear might be lost?

I’m not sure I’d add anyone.

I wouldn’t lose sleep if the Angels lost any of those players.

They’re all either low-impact players or not far along enough in their development to warrant a 40-man spot.

Another factor:

You’re way more likely to lose a player if you add them to the 40-man roster and then DFA them a few months later than if you don’t add them to the 40-man roster. (See: Brendon Davis)

So unless the player is a must-add, you’re better off protecting too few players than too many players.

BTW: Here's the Rules for 2022  https://www.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/rule-5-draft

Rule 5 Draft

Definition

Held each December, the Rule 5 Draft allows clubs without a full 40-man roster to select certain non-40-man roster players from other clubs. Clubs draft in reverse order of the standings from the previous season. Players signed at age 18 or younger need to be added to their club's 40-Man roster within five seasons or they become eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. Players who signed at age 19 or older need to be protected within four seasons.

Not every club will make a selection, but those that do pick a player must pay $100,000 to the club from which said player was selected. Rule 5 Draft picks are assigned directly to the drafting club's 26-man roster and must be placed on outright waivers in order to be removed from the 26-man roster in the subsequent season. Should the player clear waivers, he must be offered back to his previous team for $50,000 and can be outrighted to the Minors only if his original club does not wish to reacquire him. A Rule 5 Draft pick can be placed on the Major League injured list, but he must be active for a minimum of 90 days to avoid being subject to the aforementioned roster restrictions in the next campaign.

Clubs may trade a player selected in the Rule 5 Draft, but the same restrictions apply to the player's new organization. However, a club may also work out a trade with the Rule 5 pick's original club to acquire his full rights, thereby allowing him to be optioned to the Minors under traditional circumstances.

History of the rule

Prior to the 2017-21 Collective Bargaining Agreement, clubs that selected a player in the Rule 5 Draft were required to pay $50,000 to that player's previous team. If the player was placed on outright waivers during the subsequent season and went unclaimed, he would be offered back to his previous team for $25,000.

The 2021 Rule 5 Draft was canceled when the 2022-26 CBA was agreed to.

Adams and Jackson have the sort of upside that requires protection.

Guys like Pina and Salvador are the most common to be selected, as they have the relief future and could transition quickly.

But there are a bunch of guys that would definitely go in the minor league phase of the rule 5.

Mostly, I just hope they protect Maitan, just to troll everybody.

There is no eligible Angel  player on the list that another MLB club would commit to having on their 26 Man, for a full season.  No need to protect any of them.

Rebuilding teams that are not going to contend would definitely carry a high upside player and give them sporadic starts.

5. Mac Sceroler (returned to the Reds shortly into the season)

6. Zach Pop (traded to the Marlins, and then the Jays where he was just on their Wild Card series roster)

7. Jordan Sheffield (still with the Rockies, but was outrighted off the 40 man at the end of this season)

8. Jose Rivera (returned to the Astros shortly into the season)

9. Luis Oviedo (traded to Pittsburgh, claimed by Cleveland, outrighted off Cleveland's 40 man but still with the organization)

10. Will Vest (returned to Detroit shortly into the season)

11. Kyle Holder (traded to the Reds who returned him to the Yankees before the season started)

12. Dedneil Nunez (returned after being injured all year)

13. Paul Campbell (still with the Marlins but missed most of this season with injury)

14. Gray Fenter (returned to the Orioles before the season started)

15. Trevor Stephan (still with the Guardians, currently on their ALDS roster)

16. Ka'ai Tom (waived and claimed by Pittsburgh shortly into the season, who DFA'd and released him because Cleveland didn't want him back)
