Minasian and company deserve credit for capitalizing on the situation too.  With so much of Marsh's current value tied into his defense (even more in CF) where he too was blocked, resetting the clock/years of control at a premium defensive position with another potentially plus offensive player was a good move.

Now I'm hoping Orlando Martinez can up his OBP skills to the point where he can become a modern day Orlando Palmiero.

At first the trade made no sense to me. I was like...ok.

It's starting to make sense now.

I liked Marsh a lot (and still do) but I feel like his production can be replaced rather easily.

Catching prospects like this? Not exactly a dime a dozen.

I'm not getting overhyped but it's clear the dude can hit and has a fucking Death Star superlaser for an arm.

I definitely understand why Minasian is taking the risk with that trade. The reward is higher than Marsh's ceiling could ever come close to.

If you remember at the height of Marsh's prospect-ness I went on record as saying I'd move him for a catching prospect...  Position scarcity is as real as relief pitcher volatility.

The problem with catchers has always been the development path is rife with flame outs.  So trading for a guy who appears to be past that flame out point is huge.

I had never seen O'Hoppe and that was my concern.  The power numbers are noise to me, the rest of his game is not.

So today I interviewed Zach Neto, Ben Joyce, Sonny D, Eric Torres (leads the league in saves), Luke Murphy, Eric Aguilar (leads the league in OBP) and Jordyn Adams.

I'll be posting the interviews over the next week or so.

Neto & Joyce were my two favorite interviews, but the rest are good too.

I'm going back for the playoffs in September to get O'Hoppe, Jackson, Bush, Bachman and a couple other guys.

Talk to the manager of the Trash Pandas and he said Perry Minasian and him are constantly in touch. Sounds like Double-A may be some of our top prospects last stop as the dimensions and high altitude in Salt Lake are not ideal for pitchers. I could see guys like Neto and O'Hoppe, all of our position player prospects going there however.

O'Hoppe has a laser for an arm. Seeing it in person was something special. Reminds me of Pudge back there. Big time power. Him and Joyce are really STRONG dudes and in tip top shape.

On the flip side, I just wanted to drink a beer with Sonny DiChiara and give him a bear hug goodbye.

Here's a couple of videos I took, interviews to come later. You won't want to miss those!

Quero got to more at-bats needing just a single to complete the cycle and walked in both at-bats. What a bum.

In addition to the solid hitting, he is also a BBs guy (60 BBs and just 80 Ks in some 440 PAs).

.966 OPS despite playing half of his games in a hitting neutral stadium

At the age of 19

I could see a lot of the pitching prospects jumping from AA to the majors next season, a la Chase Silseth this season.

Bachman, Bush, Crow, Erla, Hernandez, Joyce, Murphy, Torres, etc.

If the Angels were contending this season, I think they might’ve pushed some more guys like Bachman, Bush, Erla, Murphy, and Torres. But since they were out of it after the 14 game losing streak, they just let those guys get more AA experience.

Loving the AA team right now.  It's a lot of fun.

That said, if the Angels are going to rely on an influx of players from AA to the majors as significant contributors to being competitive then they are about to make the same mistake they have been.

The offense needs what Ohoppe, Neto, Jackson, maybe Adams and Sonny are gonna be 2-3 years from now.  The pen needs all those arms to function like 25/26/27 year old guys with experience.

Just another setup for a mismatch in timing of who you can expect to be good when.

The Angels need to find a neutral park for their AAA affiliate. It is one move Minasian can push forward that would impact the prospect development.

and from what I understand, they've made it even weirder with humidor balls.  I think @Inside Pitch posted that the home park factors this year weren't as bad as in the past.

Yep, it's never played so close to neutral.

This is the full season data for last season -- it's down even lower this season.  First time it's ever played as league average for HRs

Yeah, but he's not a top 100 prospect because he's only 5'11", plays in the Angels organization and came from Cuba instead of the Dominican Republic or Venezuela.

Meanwhile, Francisco Alvarez is 5'10", experienced the same success in the low minors at age 19, isn't a switch hitter, nor is he as good of a defender, but he's the top freaking prospect in all of baseball?

Yeah, there's a bias in prospect rankings.

Hot take, I believe Logan O'Hoppe is better than the #1 prospect in baseball. He has better plate discipline, is a better athlete, and a far superior defensive catcher. Alvarez is a lesser version of Gary Sanchez, who had two and a half good seasons of baseball before becoming a bad defensive backup catcher.

Thanks. Hell of a season for Quero. Surprised Perry didn't promote him this year, but he is still awfully young.
