I'm a fan of carrying my own pen just so I don't get jacked getting blitzed.

Tipping is a nuisance.

I simply check if the tip is included, though it's usually only when there are big parties.

If not, and the service is solid, I tip 20% of the pre-tax amount.

I guess my many years back busboy jobs gave me a good clue into how hard people in the service industry work, and I've always remembered that to this day.

 

One time, I did tip 1 cent.   It was at a restaurant on Catalina back in 1987.    The server didn't bring the check for some 45 minutes after our plates were cleared.   That is deserving of a very small tip.    Not many things are.

But with restaurants today supplying two copies of the bill (customer copy and their copy), is that a concern anymore?

I think the restaurant has to abide by the total line and not worry about the tip line. I know that my friend who works as a waitress once had someone add the tip wrong to get the total and she had to use the total line and not what the tip + amount to equal the total. I'd assume this happens regularly (especially with drunk patrons).

Ha, maybe not. But it is a color of blue that is easily discernible from BIC blue (standard issue of the restaurant trade).

The customer copy is of the bill . It is not a copy of what you sign agreeing to pay.

At most places, both copies have a line for the tip and total. You can just mirror what you wrote on the merchant copy and have an accurate total for what should be charged.
