Beach Balls and the Wave

  1. 1. While at an Angel game, do you enjoy beach balls and the wave?

    • Yes, I think they're a fun addition to the fan experience.
    • No, they are distracting and I hate them.

Whenever I mention to someone that I detest beach balls and refuse to do the wave at Angel games, I get labeled a curmudgeon. But I can't be the only one. It's only casual fans who actually like that garbage, right?

Absolutely.  And the worst part of the Wave BS, is that the casual Angel fans start that stupid shit at the worst time (which would be any time there is a ball in play).

But I DID happen to catch the “Worlds Greatest Fans” doing the Wave in St Louis, so maybe it’s just us...

I think it generally considered "bad form" by true fans.  It mostly bothers me unless the game is a blow out and its towards the end of the game.  Drives me nuts when its like the 3rd inning and they are doing the beach balls.  My son likes both regardless.

But I do have one friend who is definitely a big Angels fan, yet really doesn't mind either and kind of enjoys the wave for whatever reason.

We've all encountered beach balls at Anaheim but this is my favorite beach ball story.

We were at a playoff game in Anaheim. It was Game 1 of the 2009 ALDS vs. Boston. Friday Thursday night.

My wife and I were seated next to two couples who flew from Boston to see the games in Anaheim. Super nice people, Boston fans obviously. We chatted a bit, I didn't tell them how much I hate Boston.

At some point during the game a beach ball comes and lands in the lap of the Boston fan sitting next to me. He looked puzzled as if to say, what am I supposed to do with this?

I said, "welcome to California!... hit it!" So he did.

I know not a great story but I still smile when I think of it.

Torii Hunter hit a 3-run HR that night and the Angels won 5-0 with Lackey starting. 7.1 IP
