Is this bullpen running on fumes, or just not that talented?

Because in most cases guys who appear good at it one season suck at it the next and vice verse. The data for most pitchers suggests it’s more random than not. It is measurable.

There do seem to be rare exceptions, though.

Thanks

It is. That’s why FIP is dumb.

no stat tells the whole story.  Every stat should be considered dumb by that criteria.  Here is a blurb from fangraphs with the concession that it's not a complete accounting of pitcher performance:

FIP Flash Card 7-11-15

FIP is a blame game stat that absolves pitchers responsibility. Never liked it and it was what Dipoto used to try and rationalize getting Blanton. This is s a stat looking for an excuse to be relevant in an age where there is far more accountability as to what happens when a hitter makes contact. FIP ignores all pitch sequence data along with pitcher stamina, control and strength of pitch variety.

In essence FIP is like measuring quality of airline service by what drinks are available in flight.

and there it is ladies and gentlemen the literal equation for the pitching equivalent of the 3 true outcomes :)

This bullpen is exactly why we need at least one more guy that can give us 6-7 innings every 5th day.  I am starting to really like the idea of the opener, because Pena seems to be better later in the game where run prevention is at more of a premium.

So with Jewel pitching more than one inning last night, who is replacing him on the roster tonight?

We're slightly over a 1/3 of the way through the season and the "games pitched" pace for some of their relievers like Robles and Buttrey is 80 games and Bedrosian is 75 games.

While Buttrey has elite closer potential, both Robles and Cam are just good middle relievers and it doesn't help that Anderson, Bard and Cole have been inconsistent and Allen has been a bust.

However, like last season, having an inconsistent offense (hot one game, cold the next) and a group of starters that rarely get into the 6th inning means average relievers will pitch more meaningful innings (within 1 to 2 run difference) than they should where a solid offense and solid SP can give you a 3 to 4 run lead into the 7th.

Right now, from a collection of Buttrey, Robles, Bedrosian, Garcia, Ramirez, Bard, Anderson, Cole, Jewell, Allen and Peters are enough to mix and match if Cahill, Skaggs, Canning, and Heaney start getting to 6 IP per night and Pena, Suarez, Tropeano, Barria, and JC Ramirez can give them SP depth on 5th and Swing starts.

The wildcard is Middleton - if he can come back ready in June/July, and pitch like he did pre-surgery, back-to-back innings of Middleton/Buttrey could be tough for teams.
