I imagine he's getting DFAed again whenever we bring in the next player. This is how you build depth though. If no one claims him this time around, you can stash him at SLC and bump everyone down a rung.

Also, this may make it seem like Wieters is less likely, but say the Angels are close to dealing Perez for a pitcher and signing Wieters, this could make sense.

His CERA is why.

Mathis career CERA: 3.79
The MLB average over his 12-year career is 4.14. While I really don't put much stock into that stat and don't see it as much of a true indicator of anything, it is pretty interesting when you stack it up to a lot of other MLB catchers with significant playing time over the years. If you were needing a cheap back-up and you saw this list, why not?

Ellis: 3.32
Posey: 3.50
Molina: 3.61
Mathis: 3.79
Maldonado: 3.80
McCann: 3.81
Vogt: 3.86
Ruiz: 3.92
d'Arnaud: 3.93
Avila: 3.96
Montero: 3.97
Lucroy: 4.02
Carlos Perez: 4.12
Napoli: 4.29
Iannetta: 4.30
Saltalamacchia: 4.30
Wieters: 4.32
Castillo: 4.46
Bandy: 4.53

We have two catchers on the 40 man roster....Eppler must not be seeking Scioscia's approval on things.  No way we go into the season with 2 catchers on the 40 man roster

We usually only have two on the 40-man. It's not until late in the season when one is added.

Tony Sanchez and Francisco Arcia could both be added at any point during the season if there is need. Both are more than capable to be our 3rd string option.

Plus Wieters looms...

I'm not too worried about catching depth. Both Perez and Maldonado are defensive experts with a basic offensive game which is make contact and hope for the best. Those aren't the hardest to replace.

Tony Sanchez is a good option as a third string catcher, and if we need anyone beyond that point, there are countless catch and throw guys from the minors that we could plug in.
