Dodgers Release Alex Guerrero

I wouldn't mind him in LF or 3B

makes Escobar expendable imo

He can't really play any position but someone will pick him up with the eye to giving him DH ABs, maybe the White Sox for example. We could do worse though.

He is an average fielder at 3B, 2B and LF.

He also has power at the plate.  He is worth getting, have him work at one of those positions in AAA and then bring him up.  He would also be very cheap for whoever takes a chance on him.

Defensive metrics of his MLB time in LF are pretty awful. The Dodgers clearly didn't think he could play the infield either.

You can't base anything on the Dodgers letting him go.  They are so deep, they don't need to waste time on a dude like that.  The Angels have nothing.  They need anything they can get.

they didn't release him because of their depth, they released him because he sucked ass

I'd prefer the Angels sign Guerrero, if for no other reason that to simply take a chance on him raking at the plate over the next two months (the first time he'll have been given everyday AB's at the major league level) and trading him at the deadline for a nice shiny prospect.  Same with Lincecum, same with Chacin.  Trade them along with Santiago, Smith and Escobar and net as many prospects as you can.  Rebuild the farm system in a matter of couple months while not parting with anything irreplaceable.

Not completely true at all.

What is the truth then?

It's true that he's sucked ass

and it's true that they released him.

If they didn't do so because he sucked then they did so because he's a head case malcontent who sabotaged himself to get out of the org.

There isn't a scenario in my mind where this guy is worth a damn.

Other

Other than he is better than the majority of players the Angels have in AAA?

he's 29 years old VC.  He's not a prospect.  He's not really going to develop beyond what he is.

He should be better than most AAA players at that age.  He might be a serviceable major leaguer but it's pretty damn hard to tell relative to his track record.

BTW....I didn't mean to imply this guy is the piece this team needs or anything.  I'm just saying that given the state of the Angels system, it may be worth picking him up, throw him on the Bees and sees what happens.

Only if the Halos got him at the current portion of the MLB minimum, and sent him to SLC to get his confidence up.
