Asher Edelman, inspiration for Gordon Gekko, says Bernie's plan best for economy

Recommended Posts

In 2007 Edelman loaned Courier 1, a painting by American painter Robert Ryman, to the Swiss-based Galerie Gmurzynska for exhibition at Art Basel Miami Beach. After its return the painting was sent to a dealer in New York for consignment, but was found to be damaged. According to Edelman the painting had a "big gouge" which rendered the artwork "a total loss".[9] The painting had been insured for $750,000 with Edelman’s insurer, XL Specialty Insurance.[9] Edelman claimed that the Gmurzynska had disputed the case and had instructed its own insurer not to pay. XL Specialty Insurance made Edelman its assignee, and he then sued the gallery for $750,000 plus a further $250,000 for “willful conduct of defendant” and “reprehensible motives and such wanton dishonesty as to imply a criminal indifference to civil obligations.”[10] In October 2009 a New York district court awarded a judgement of $767,438 against the gallery. Using a writ of execution for an unanswered lawsuit Edelman arranged for the US Marshals Service to confiscate some of the gallery's works at the opening of the Art Basel Miami Beach fair.[9] Marshals removed four paintings which Edelman valued at $6 million. The gallery denied instructing its insurer to withhold payment and claimed that they had no knowledge of the judgement; they paid up and the paintings were returned to the stand.[9]

In 2010 Edelman was sued by Emigrant Savings Bank over $3 million of loans.[4] Collateral on the loans included a sculpture by Alberto GiacomettiTorse de Femme. Edelmann sold the sculpture and paid the debt plus $1.1 million in court judgements. He then sued Emigrant for fraud.[4]

In February 2014 Edelman's company ArtAssure sued the Swiss company Artmentum for breach of contract and allegedly fraudulent representations. ArtAssure were offered a collection of over 100 paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, supposed to have been in the ownership of Hiroshima Bank of Japan, at a discounted price of €350 million. The sale was contingent on the purchase being made through Artmentum for confidentiality. After several months of negotiations, Artmentum failed to provide evidence that they were authorised to sell the collection. The claim for $204 million was brought before a judge in a New York court.[11] The claim was dismissed on the grounds that Artmentum was a Swiss company, with few commercial activities in the US, and therefore the case was outside the jurisdiction of the court.[12]

Yep, good dude to have in your corner for sure.

You are looking down in the ocean at the Arizona and keep thinking an air bubble or two means everyone is still alive.

Saunders has as much chance as Rubio to capture the party nomination.

Eric, as I've said before, I'm going down with the ship.

As I see it, its like this, translating it into a baseball game:

1st inning (before the primaries): Hillary leads off with a Grand Slam and three-run HR, up 7-0

2nd inning (Iowa): Hillary scores another, but Bernie scores a run too, 8-1

3rd inning (NH): Bernie scores 1, 8-2

4th inning (Super Tuesday): Hillary scores 4, but Bernie comes back with 2; 12-4

5th inning (Miss/Michigan): Hillary gets another run, but Bernie surprises with 2 runs; 13-6

So yeah, still down 7 runs...but four innings to go. And the good news is that even though Hillary started the game 7-0, its been 6-6 since the first inning.

Again, what about what Edelman said? Address that, rather than dredge up the same old links that we've all seen (and there's disagreement on).

This is how I view it so i have not been concerned with the whloe Sanders Socialism and death camp things.  Remember we had those 7 years ago and I have thrived well in one.

Please, you act like this guy is unassailable.

There is disagreement on everything.  It is like a trial with both sides providing "expert testimony".  You can always find/pay someone to agree with your point of view.

I will make the same point I have made several times:  We have given money to the federal government time and time again.  Each and every time we get either nothing or at best pennies on the dollar.  How many times have we heard that this person or that person is "different"?

Why, in any logical universe, should I willingly give my money to them once again?

The American taxpayer:  the biggest saps in the world.  PT Barnum was so right.

Well when you look at things it is always a Dem who is wasting your tax dollars and people fondle over the GOP who says no taxes, who then start trillion dollar wars and never really do anything about the programs Dems are hated for.  You get the Holy Grail of wasting your money with the GOP, they just know how to hide it better.

Not for me.

I understand and partially agree with your point. But again, I was asking for someone to address what Edelman actually said, rather than make attacks on his character (which are probably justified, but irrelevant) or offering links we've all seen before.

Edelman makes a very basic point about economy, what he calls the "velocity of money."  Here's what he said:

“When you have the top one percent getting money, they spend five-ten percent of what they earn. When you have the lower end of the economy getting money, they spend a hundred, or a hundred and ten percent of what they earn. As you’ve had a transfer of wealth to the top, and a transfer of income to the top, you have a shrinking consumer base, basically, and you have a shrinking velocity of money.”

“Bernie is the only person out there who I think is talking at all about both fiscal stimulation and banking rules that will get the banks to begin to generate lending again as opposed to speculation.”

“So from an economic point of view, it’s straight-forward.”

I beg to differ.  You say you are indifferent but only hop in to speak on the part of the Rep.   I on the other hand make fun of them because they give me no choice but to never want to vote for one again.  I have no problem voting for one again but just don't see how at this point in their NTSB derailment.

I couldn't care less about his character.  Even the most rotten person in the world can be right.

and again, make all the arguments you want.  This stuff doesn't happen in a vacuum.  There is no way, even if Bernie is as sincere as you believe he is, even if his policies work like you believe they will, that in eight years he will even begin to touch what is wrong with this country.
