A case for Denard Span

I like Denard Span on a 2-3 year deal with a player option or a one year deal to prove he is healthy. He would be the perfect lead off. He would be cheap. Last year he was injured. 

 

He bats left, has speed, steals bases, gets on base, has no qualfying offer.  The perfect lead off hitter. This guy is beast against right handed pitching.

I think he'd be a great option even if his speed has decreased after hip surgery. Playing left with exceptional defense with Simmons and Trout around him will help him ease back into things.

Even if he isn't the same burner or stolen base threat, he'll still have a good eye and contact skills and should be a good top of the order guy.

Given that he is coming off surgery and couple with this year's strong FA OF class and next year's thin class, you may even be able to snag him on a one year deal. He may hope to prove he's healthy and return next year as a centerfield option in a weak class. May even be able to offer a QO.

He seems to always be hurt. Already have several guys in our lineup with zero power, don't want to add another. Scioscia managed teams don't run anymore so I think his speed would go to waste. No thanks.

We don't need power. We need a guy who gets on base, bats left, and steal bases.

He'd be a great option, better than Parra or any of the lesser guys...if it wasn't for the hip injury. A hip injury + 32 years old = not a good bet.

A HEALTHY Denard Span is the perfect fit. But hip surgery is no joke. It saps speed and completely alters a swing. I think if we're out of options, we can go there, but I'd prefer to chase a more sure option.
