Heyward isn't worth $78M over three years no matter how you slice it ... even in his prime. Don't think I'm the Lone Ranger with that thought.

 

You may not be the lone ranger on that but it's still absolutely wrong. A top 30 offensive player playing elite defense at a premium position is worth a top tier contract. The fact that he's only going to be 26 means your risk is extremely low.

 

To put it in perspective, David Ortiz and his 37 homers had the exact same offensive value as Jason Heyward last year. Ortiz was a DH, and Heyward was an elite defender. Heyward is entering his prime and Ortiz is on the back side of a hall of fame career.
