Babe Ruth baseball glove sells at auction for record $1.53 million

A baseball glove personally donated by Babe Ruth to St. Louis Browns third baseman Jimmy Austin sold Saturday at the 19th annual Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory auction for $1.53 million, shattering the record paid for a baseball glove.

The previous record is believed to be $387,500 for a Lou Gehrig glove sold with Sotheby's in 1999. In 2013, a Jackie Robinson glove believed to have been used in both the 1955 and 1956 World Series sold for just over $373,000 by Steiner Sports.

The Ruth glove was manufactured by Spalding for Ruth's use circa 1927-1933. An audio recording from 1964, used in "The Glory of Their Times," captures Austin discussing the glove and pounding its leather with his hand.

French lake giant fish

Fisherman nabs monster-sized goldfish

While fishing in France, a British man caught a monster-size carp nicknamed "the Carrot," which weighed nearly 70 pounds.

Andy Hackett, 42, made the find while fishing Bluewater Lakes in Champagne, France. The 20-year-old female carp weighed 67.5 pounds.

The fished is prized by anglers because of her coloration, as most giant carp are pale or brownish, USA Today reported.

He said he spent 25 minutes reeling in the fish.

Bluewater Lakes is a premier carp fishery, according to the newspaper. It’s so popular that guests have to book well in advance.

"The Carrot" was released back into the lake. A video posted by the fishery shows Hackett holding the giant fish before putting it back in the water.

Saudi players receive jaw-dropping gift for historic World Cup upset

After Argentina became the victim of maybe the biggest upset in World Cup history in losing to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, star player Lionel Messi said his team felt "dead."

That makes one of them, because the Saudis sure weren't.

In fact, the Saudi government made the next day a national holiday to celebrate the victory, but the players got the gift of a lifetime.

Each player was reportedly gifted a Rolls Royce Phantom for the upset.

A 2023 Rolls Royce Phantom's list price begins at nearly $460,000, according to Car and Driver.

William Walter "Pudge" Heffelfinger was a strapping 6-foot-3, 205-pound lineman for the dominant Yale teams of 1888 to 1891. He became the first professional football player in 1892, when the Allegheny Athletic Association paid him $500 to play against the rival Pittsburgh Athletic Club.

Heffelfinger also proved to be one of the great ironmen in sports history.

He played competitive football at one level or another well into his 60s, after college as a barnstorming mercenary and in later years as a celebrity figure at charity games.

"In 1916, at age 49, he scrimmaged against the Yale varsity. In 1920, age 53, he played 50 minutes for the East All-Stars against the Ohio State All-Stars at Columbus, Ohio," says the National Football Foundation.

"In 1930, age 63, he made his final appearance in a football uniform in an all-star game at Minneapolis."

Other sources put his last game at age 65, in a charity event for World War I veterans in 1932.
