Jose Rondon skips a level

Angels shortstop prospect Jose Rondon has been assigned to High-A Inland Empire.

The Angels are having Rondon skip Low-A to send him to High-A after hitting a respectable .293/.359/.399 as a 19-year old in rookie level in 2013. He will play in one of the most offense-friendly ballparks in one of the most offense-friendly leagues, so he could put up huge numbers, causing his prospect status to proliferate. Watch him closely, as he could end the season in Double-A with a strong showing.

The plan all along was for Rondon to go to Inkand Empire this season, so this isn't exactly shocking news. He was going to be in Burlington last season before a wrist injury and subsequent rehab cost him a good chunk of April and May.

But the two names I'll be watching for the 66ers will be Jose Rondon and Kyle McGowin. The Angels may have came away with a heist in their 5th round selection.

Also, Cal Towey moving to catcher. This is intriguing because of his offensive upside but we know defensively deficient catchers don't last under Scioscia. So he'll need to get a lot of playing time, he'll need to do a lot of catching up defensively and he'll need to continue to hit to make this worth following.
