Matt Shoemaker

Has been steadily improving and has had a nice second half aside from a single start where he got hammered.  His last four starts have been very good.  Anyone seen him pitch?  Any potential for a long guy out of the pen or is he likely a career minor leaguer?

Shoemaker has pitched very well in his last 4 starts. Looks like he is very durable as he is not faltering near the end of the season but actually having some of his strongest starts of the year. 7 innings per game, 1.93 ERA, 26ks and only 3 BBs. I think he would adapt well to long relief.

I'd call him up in September. Why the hell not? He's had a good season...give him 5-10 appearances see what he can bring.

Loving his control. 1.46/9 BB%. Excellent. Also a 5 to 1 K/BB ratio. His ERA doesn't do those numbers justice.

Why not call him up? What the hell do we have to lose at this point? See if he can be an upgrade at long reliever over Williams for next year.

Last night's playoff game is an example of why I think Shoemaker could help the Angels. He didn't have his best stuff and seemed to be fighting his control a lot of the game, but he continued to battle and he made big pitches when he had too. Las Vegas had a chance to put the game away in the 3rd and again in the 4th and each time Shoemaker was able to pitch out of the jam. Each inning ended with him recording a strikeout.

 

I don't see him in the rotation but I think he would be a great 2 inning-middle relief type that could keep the Angels in the game and be a bridge to the setup guy and closer.

He has nothing further to prove in the minors.    Promote him after the post-season is over.

 

Speaking of which, as the post-season ends, I'd promote Shoemaker, Berg, and Navarro, and maybe Maronde.

Coello should be ready to pitch for the Halos in about a week to 10 days.

Ya, I would like to see Shoemaker and Berg as well. Maronde will probably be here no matter what pretty much, since he's already on the 40-man. Although the last time we saw him he still looked broken.

 

I don't think Navarro is worth the trouble of adding to the 40-man though. The 40-man is currently full if I'm counting correctly, and while there is a guy or two you could move to the 60-day DL and some guys you would be unlikely to lose and/or miss if you took them off the 40-man, Navarro would be way down my personal priority list of guys to add.

I forgot that Navarro wasn't on the 40 man.

Shoemaker, Berg, Maronde, and Coello should be enough players to add anyway.

Calhoun can play 1B in a pinch anyway.
