Opening Day Roster 2014

As for the realistic rotation I think Dipoto will give us next year:

Weaver, Wilson, Vargas, Hughes and Richards

They may trade a couple players for some bullpen depth, but I can't see the Angels spending the money for Garza (especially if the Ranger want to resign him).

The only good news is if Richards continues like he has pitched, the rotation could be:

Weaver, Wilson, Richards, Vargas and Hughes

lol

Jerry's strength seems to be trading more proven players for younger talent or even equivalent major league talent as opposed to FA signings and trades of minor league talent for major leaguers.

Haren for prospects.  Callaspo for prospects.  Morales for Vargas. All good

Santana for nothing.  Greinke for prospects.  FA signings of Pujols, Hamilton, Blanton.  All not so good.

Outliers are Frieri for prospects and Hanson for Walden.

I have a lot more confidence in his ability to get value from guys like Kendrick, Bourjos, Aybar or Trumbo than I do him signing a FA or trading some minor leaguers for a SP.

There is really no value on the FA market on SP side next year.  If you are gonna spend 20mil per on Garza, you might as well bring in three quality relievers for that money and imo the upgrade to what you have will be far more significant.  While I don't think it's a good idea to spend a ton on the pen, there are some pretty solid guys available from the pen while SP FA are thin at best.  But hey, I'm a big bullpen guy.

I think most folks are putting what THEIR lineup is for next year, not what they think the Angels will do.  Two very different things, in many cases that's a good thing.  This is what I think the Angels will do, not what I'd do.

CF Bourjos

LF Trout

DH Pujols

1B Trumbo

RF Hamilton

2B Kendrick

SS Aybar

C Iannetta

3B Green

BENCH: Shuck, Conger, Jimenez, Romine

Rotation: Weaver, Wilson, Garza, Hughes, Richards

Bullpen: Heath Bell, Carlos Marmol, Ernesto Frieri, Dane De La Rosa, Sean Burnett, Cory Rasmus and Joe Blanton

They'll win 84 games.

swap out Hughes for Vargas, who I think they'll re-sign on a short term deal, and I think that's pretty close.  Either way, that's pretty depressing IMO.
