OC Register: Logan O’Hoppe hurt in Angels’ loss to Yankees

Recommended Posts

NEW YORK — The Angels were on the verge of losing by six runs on a day when they walked 11 hitters, and then the afternoon got ugly.

Catcher Logan O’Hoppe hurt his shoulder on a swing in the ninth inning of the Angels’ 9-3 loss to the New York Yankees.

O’Hoppe had felt something in his left shoulder during a swing on Monday in Boston, and this time he seemed to hurt it even worse. This time he was visibly in pain as he stood at first base – he had singled on the swing – and he quickly came out of the game.

There was no immediate word on the severity of the injury.

The rookie catcher has performed well this season, earning praise from the pitchers and hitting a team-leading four homers.

The Angels were already having a lousy day before that.

Left-hander Patrick Sandoval gave up five runs in the first inning, including three walks. He made it through four innings, which saved the bullpen.

The Angels briefly had a chance to get back in the game. Sandoval and left-hander Tucker Davidson held the Yankees scoreless while the Angels chipped away with two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh. Anthony Rendon was at the plate with the bases loaded in the seventh, a hit away from tying the score. He hit a flyout to left.

Before the Angels could get back to the plate in the eighth, the Yankees scored three runs to restore their five-run lead.

It was just the second time in the Angels’ 10 losses that the margin was more than two runs.

More to come on this story.
