He’s an important piece and around for three seasons.  I think he’ll be better than today usually, pitching in Fenway and not confident in his bullpen or defense.  He did get a four run lead so it was a good chance for him.  He didn’t have it today.

The guys where they paid for the contract year (Anderson and Drury) have predictably regressed. The guys that were acquired based on their consistency (Renfroe and Urshela) have been successful. Not a coincidence.

Solution: don’t sign people having career year in walk year.

Doesn’t seem like it works out well enough nearly often enough.

Career year free agents really need to be vetted deeply. Especially comparing the most recent  seasons previous to that big year. And career trends and patterns need to be studied. Age as well is a consideration. As well as team/coaching factors that won't travel with the player. Even the question of complacency after signing a major deal.

In the end it's a gamble, where team needs usually create the most optimistic spin in decision making.

The contract they signed Anderson to basically acknowledged that he was due for a regression and that they were purely gambling on how big it would be. Doesn't seem too sensible.

I think that the FO was probably hoping Anderson could at least pitch like the 2021 version of himself, even if he couldn't reprise his 2022 year.  While he hasn't been that good for most of his career, he did pitch in Colorado for awhile, so I could see how they might feel that he's better than his career numbers indicate.

It's too early to declare him a bust, and remember, his contract did look like a steal after we started seeing what the contracts looked like for all the players who signed after him.  Let's see how he does pitching to someone who isn't Thaiss and maybe wait to judge until 10 or so starts.
