Another Minor Leaguer to keep an eye on may be Trey Cabbage, who is putting together a very nice season in AAA. A free agent from the Twins system, Cabbage joined the Angels as a free agent in 2022 and went on to have a really good season for the Trash Pandas last year:

.327 / .434 / .664 / 1.098 for a 182 wRC+.

This year he is going even better in AAA:

.462 / .488 / .872 / 1.360 for a 217 wRC+.

His BABIP looks like an unsustainable .517, but a deeper dive shows he had a BABIP last year of an equally 'unsustainable' .474 for the season, and the year before that had a BABIP of .393. Add to that his extra base hits of 8/18 this year, 17/37 last year, and 29/64 in '21, and you can see the guy clearly has some serious power, and is trending upward in almost all categories across the last three seasons.

wRC+ was 131 in 2021, 182 in '22, and 217 in '23

Slugging was .382 in 2021, .664 in '22, and .872 in '23

Avg. was .264 in 2021, .327 in '22, and .462 in '23.

This is his age 26 season, so maybe the guy is a late bloomer who has finally worked it out.

He hasn't really nailed down a position yet, playing LF, 1B, and mostly DH this year, so with the Angels team profile at MLB level he may be a trade chip rather than a future everyday player for us. Whatever happens, he's one to watch.

Today when I asked someone about Cabbage I was told to look at Chad Wallach’s OPS. It’s about .900.

It’s the PCL. Take everything there with many grains of salt.

yeah, but Cabbage's OPS is nearly .400 points higher than Wallach's.

And his wRC+ is a whopping 217, compared to Wallach's 133.

Even if you regress everyone down, due to the inflated PCL stats, Cabbage is still putting up insane numbers.

And did so the past couple of seasons too, albeit missing a lot of 2022.

Don’t need him every day up here, just the same job Lamb has currently, and failing.

The rebuttal should have been, let’s look at Chad Wallach’s OPS in Double-A vs. Trey Cabbage. The PCL really isn’t a good place to compare dick sizes.

Wallach in Double-A in 2016 (Southern League) .773 OPS

Cabbage in Double-A in 2021 (Texas League) .882 OPS

Cabbage in Double-A in 2022 (Southern League) 1.098 OPS

Don’t take it so literally.

The point is it’s a very small sample in a very hitter-friendly environment, so don’t get carried away.

How many times in the last few years have you guys all gotten excited about someone who put up huge numbers at AAA and then came to the majors and stunk?

Anyway, yesterday Lamb had 3 hits and Walsh took a big step toward returning.

Cabbage looked good in AA last year too, and makes really hard contact. At best though I think he sort of is just an up and down depth guy. If Walsh continues to have problems and Lamb doesn’t work out and Thaiss is lost on waivers there might be some opportunity there as a lefty 1B/OF platoon guy.

But you have to make room for Cabbage on the 40 man roster. You can release Lamb but then you are probably releasing Cabbage when Walsh returns.

Not saying anything imminent, just in the next year-ish this is probably where he fits.
