Angels star Mike Trout went 5 for 15 against the Tigers in April and hit a grand slam off scheduled starter Rick Porcello (4-4, 4.74) during a 10-0 win April 20.

Porcello allowed nine runs and nine hits while facing 11 batters in two-thirds of an inning to fall to 3-3 with a 7.68 ERA in eight starts against Los Angeles.

Since that outing, Porcello is 4-2 with a 3.43 ERA in 10 starts. However, he gave up six runs in six innings of a 13-3 loss to Baltimore on Wednesday.

to be fair, he didn't pitch poorly against the angels in his last game. most of the hits were infield hits. i had never seen anything quite like it.

Lol. You're unbelievable. The guy pitched only 2/3 of an inning and gave up 9 hits, 9 ER, 1 walk, 1 HR (Grand Slam) and you think he didn't pitch poorly.

I'm usually not one to say that the numbers don't reflect how a pitcher really pitched, but that was truly one of the most bizarre innings I've ever seen.

Alvarez will start tomorrow in place of the injured Anibal Sanchez. It will be only his third ML appearance. Soft-tossing lefty, just what we need.

Scouting report from 2009:

Small lefty with a 88-91 mph straight fastball.  He also throws a 72-76 mph changeup and an average low-70s curveball. His curveball shows sweeping action at times, but also shows 12-6 break on occasion. It's a work in progress, but he already misses bats with it.  His changeup is pretty deceptive - it keeps batters off balance.  His arm action on his change is indiscernible from his fastball.  Decent control, Alvarez pounds the zone, but tends to leave the ball up too often, where he really can get hit around.

Anytime a pitcher gives up those numbers in only 2/3 of an inning, you can't say he didn't pitch poorly.

Did you watch the game? Porcello truly had some horrible luck in that inning. Of course, Trout's grand slam was hard hit, but it wasn't even a bad pitch that he drove out. The rest of the hits he gave up were infield choppers and flares.

Yes, I remember the game very well. It was a Sat. afternoon game on FOX. There weren't many balls hit hard, but how could you say a pitcher that gave up 9 ER, 9 hits,  1 walk (no K's) in ONLY 2/3 of an inning didn't pitch poorly?
