Time soon to relegate him to a utility role?  Problem is, he’s still owed $25.5m (including 2026/2027 buyouts) through 2025.

Can Wade handle SS well enough?

...I'm not entirely sure Wade's gonna be much different.

Fletch won't be a problem when the rest of the offense is functioning. He'll be fine as the #9 hitter as he is. It's just magnified when there aren't 4-5 above-average hitters and maybe 1-2 average hitters in the lineup.

We didn't have that most of last year, we haven't had it in the first five games.

What he does with the bat - not strike out, make a lot contact - actually works really well (even when he's struggling) if the other parts of the line-up are working. I really like the speed of Adell/Wade/Marsh ahead of Fletcher for that reason, and having him as the #9 ahead of Ohtani, Trout and Rendon. He doesn't walk a lot, sure, but by not striking out a lot there's at least reasonable chance he's on when they start coming up later in the game.

So sign a big money guy then?   Not with Ohtani and Thor potentially being re-signed and paying Trout/Rendon some $70-75m combined per year

Upton money coming off the books after this year. Have cheap OF besides Trout in Adell, Ward and Marsh. Your 1B in Walsh cheap plus 3 to 4 young starters cheap. Catcher is signed along with 3 big pieces in bullpen for next year. Angels way under 230 tax limit for this year. Minasian has put team in decent position for future. Halos will have many options going forward. Ohtani is big question mark and should be first priority. I have no idea what you start his extension at and for how long.

Velazquez's defense hasn't been that bad though. At this point, having Fletcher on the roster doesn't make the Angels a better team

At least have both Fletcher and Velasquez in there often enough, without taking too much from the offense.

Wade, Mayfield, and Duffy are just decent defensively.
