I would have kept Thaiss up and decided who to keep between Mayfield and Gosselin. Or get rid of both and start Rengifo everyday.

Yeah, that's what I don't get.  I'm guessing on some level, it's an indication that they really do think Walsh will be back soon--but even so, you're at the very least playing the next 4 or 5 games with only one player who has played 1B for any length of time (Stassi and Suzuki have both played a few innings at 1B at various times in their careers, but I don't really think they're options unless it's an extreme emergency).  Such a bizarre year from a roster management standpoint...

It's a head scratcher. The only thing I can think of is that they want Thaiss to continue to get starts at catcher.

Sure, and I have no problem with that in general.  But you still need a first baseman on your major league roster, whether it's Thaiss or...I don't know Jose Rojas (ugh...).  Rojas hasn't really played much there, either.

Situations like this are just a stark reminder of how off-balance the system still is in some way.  Just look at the people who've played 1B at Salt Lake City and Rocket City this year:

SLC:

Preston Palmeiro (45 games)

Drew Butera (16)

Matt Thaiss (12)

Jake Gatewood (4)

Francisco Arcia (3)

Jon Jay (3)

Anthony Bemboom (2)

Rocket City:

David Mackinnon (57)

Mitch Nay (12)

Ibandel Isabel (9)

Matt Jones (1)

That's gag-inducing...

I actually saw Jared Walsh working out and doing baseball stuff and hitting yesterday, so he's definitely not far off.
