I have vivid memories of this. I was in school in Florida during the Cuban missile crisis, and my father was in the military.

we got under our desks, too, right in front of a bank of 6 foot tall windows across one entire wall. those desks would have also protected us from earthquakes, fires, and tornados.

and since we were less than ten miles from places like TRW and HUGHES and all the aerospace stuff, we figured we would've been taken out pretty quickly in one quick, blinding flash of pure energy.

My city was the home port of the Navy's South Atlantic Fleet. We were on the list.
