6 Man Rotation and switching pitchers

Recommended Posts

Could the Angels ever use the fact they have 6 pitchers to their advantage and sometimes have a pitcher pitcher on 4 days rest instead of 5 to mess with the other team. For instance lets say are playing a team that is very big on platoons. Lets say Shoemakers i announced the starter and he is on 5 days rest. The opposing team puts in a bunch of lefties because Shoemakers is right handed. Can the angels have Shoemakers make one pitch than substitute Skaggs if he was on 4 days rest. You can also do the opposite if Skaggs was scheduled to pitch and the team puts in a bunch of right handers. What would be the downside of doing this? Seems like it would negate an opposing team who heavily platoons.

Essentially I want to know can the angels list Shoemaker as the starting pitcher, than after he pitches 1 pitch they switch to Skaggs. This way if the team went with all lefties because they faced a righty, Skaggs will than have a bunch of lefty hitters.

There’s no rule preventing this but it would be seen as a really douchey move.

Also, the Angels pitchers in question probably wouldn’t appreciate in. One would have to do all his warmups for nothing and another would have to start a game without his usual warm up. (Starters do a lot of Long toss that relievers can’t do when their warmup is limited to the bullpen.)

I also think the advantage you’d get would be negligible. There aren’t that many players whose splits who are that extreme, and if there are, they are still a small part of a lineup. It would only be worth it if the other team had three or four of them.
