LOS ANGELES — At 8:57 p.m. Tuesday, a small pool of liquid appeared on the dirt warning track just beyond the third-base dugout at Dodger Stadium. The smell of raw sewage began to permeate the air. Thirty-two minutes later, that small pool had spilled over into the first row of seats with no sign of letting up, and the game was officially cancelled.

That is how spring training ended for the Dodgers and Angels.

Fans and players were treated to an early exit after the Dodgers’ 4-3 victory, making wisecracks along the way about the stinky end to a 4½-inning game.

The Dodgers’ coaches didn’t have it so easy. Not only were they burdened with the final round of roster cuts after the game, some of the flooding had seeped into their quarters.

“Apparently in the middle of the fifth inning, there was a pipe backup on two different levels of the stadium,” Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten said. “We don’t know where the backup was or what caused it other than a main pipe here and a main pipe outside the stadium. The city is aware of it.”

There was the little the grounds crew could do, though they tried for half an hour. Nine men wearing blue jackets, khaki shorts and tennis shoes futilely pushed the sewer water around with wide metal rakes. Another poured dirt onto the warning track. The water kept bubbling and the field only smelled worse.

The game was declared “suspended” at first, but the initial optimism soon went up in fumes.

“We had no idea how long that would take,” Kasten said. “After a conversation with (Dodgers manager) Dave (Roberts) and (Angels manager) Mike (Scioscia) and the umpires we decided it was best to end the game.”

Kasten said it was too soon to announce if refunds would be awarded to the fans in attendance. He did not think the leak would jeopardize Thursday’s regular-season opener against the San Francisco Giants.

“We’ll know a lot more (Wednesday),” he said.

Yasiel Puig and Matt Kemp hit home runs against Angels starter JC Ramirez.

The Angels used three singles and an error to score a pair of runs against Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu in the second inning. A sacrifice fly by Albert Pujols tied the score at 3-3 in the third.

Kemp’s solo home run to right-center field against Ramirez in the fourth inning proved to be the deciding run.

Ramirez allowed eight hits and four runs, all earned, in 3-2/3 innings.

Ryu allowed three runs (two earned) in 4-2/3 innings of work.

The Dodgers finish spring training with a record of 17-15, the Angels 13-20.
