When something happens on a baseball field that even Vin Scully has never seen, there's a good chance that it's something nobody has ever seen.

That's why Jack Howell's broken-bat home run on Sept. 5, 1987, seemed like one of the rarest feats in baseball history. Now, before you argue the point, consider that by the late '80s, Scully had already been just about everywhere and seen just about everything related to baseball during three-plus decades as a broadcaster. All those Dodgers games. All those World Series. All those All-Star Games. All those Games of the Week. But he'd never seen this.
