When something happens on a baseball field that even Vin Scully has never seen, there's a good chance that it's something nobody has ever seen.

That's why Jack Howell's broken-bat home run on Sept. 5, 1987, seemed like one of the rarest feats in baseball history. Now, before you argue the point, consider that by the late '80s, Scully had already been just about everywhere and seen just about everything related to baseball during three-plus decades as a broadcaster. All those Dodgers games. All those World Series. All those All-Star Games. All those Games of the Week. But he'd never seen this.

It was the Saturday game of the week on NBC.  Scully and Garagiola announced every one of those games on Saturday.

1987 was one of the years they experimented with the juiced baseballs. They became commonplace starting in the mid-90's. When they went back to the normal baseballs in 1988, the home run total plummeted by an amazing 1,278!
