Baseball Photo Trivia

On the subject of 1-0 games, one that always sticks in my mind is the 20 inning 1-0 Halos loss in Oakland in 1971.

Where Rudy May, over 12 innings, matched eventual 1971 Cy Young winner and 24 game winner Vida Blue (11 innings).    No one pitches 11 or 12 innings anymore.    Only ONE Halo batter walked, and 26 K'd, in 20 innings.   Tony Conigliaro went 0-8 (as did Billy Cowan and Syd O'Brien), and retired after the game.

Game time was 5:05.   Nowadays, some 12 inning games may equal that.

I love this photo. Earl Webb of the 1930 Red Sox waiting his turn at bat. Sparse crowd and tired looking players on what may have been a sweltering hot day. Webb was the best hitter on a team with the worst offense in the AL. Boston finished in last place that year with a record of 52-102.

The following year, 1931, Webb set an all-time MLB record with 67 doubles.

The 1928 Boston Braves were not only a bad team, but they were also plagued by weather problems throughout the season. As a result, in September they played 14 doubleheaders, nine consecutive from September 4-15!

Could you imagine Sosh's BP management with 9 consecutive doubleheaders?

Why unfairly?  Frank Merkle.  Cost his team the pennant by being an idiot on the bases.

There's a little more to the story. Joe McGinnity had thrown the ball into the stands during the chaos on the field, and Johnny Evers somehow turned up with (probably) another ball that he used to tag Merkle. There was also an umpire who informed Merkle on his way to the dugout that the game was over and the Giants had won. One newspaper account said that Cubs' players physically restrained Merkle from even getting to second. Lots of contradictory accounts of the situation.

And it's Fred Merkle, not Frank.

His manager John McGraw defended him through the years and stressed that it wasn't his fault they lost the pennant, which actually occurred in the make-up game two weeks later.

Kind of like with Steve Bartman and Donnie Moore

The Cubs would still have likely won the 2003 NLCS if Gonzales fields that routine DP ball later on that 8th inning.

Moore and Dave Henderson will be linked forever, but can't forget Gary Lucas hitting his first ever MLB hitter right before the Henderson HR, or DeCinces and Grich failing to get the ALCS winning run in from 3B in the bottom of the 9th.

It takes a team to win and to lose.

Yep. Mauch had to bring in Moore to face Henderson after that Lucas blunder. That was a no-brainer.

Bad things happen in baseball. It was just one of those things. We still could have taken one of those next two games, but no, we didn't.

Didn't they even take a 3 run lead in the 1st inning in game 6 in Baahston, and only then did the total tank happen.  The pitching sucked in games 6 and 7.  McCaskill was especially terrible in his two starts, after a rock solid season.   He should have built the momentum from the 3 run lead in game 6, but failed.

I looked it up. A 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game 6, and Boston tied it in the bottom of the inning, then got six hits off McCaskill in the third and took a 7-2 lead before Mauch went to the bullpen.

I was reading a story about the two-inning exhibition game they held that day between Yankee oldtimers and former stars from other teams.

Cobb led off the game and warned the infielders that his grip on the bat was shaky and it might fly out of his hands. They played back, and he laid down a nice bunt. But his 61-year old legs couldn't get him to first base before the throw got there. He was fuming after being called out, but a few moments later broke out into a grin, realizing it was all for fun.
