You have to think that whoever found this had some knowledge of baseball history.  It could've easily been discarded as junk.

 

Makes you wonder how many times in the past have people gone through their family "junk" and thrown out stuff worth a lot of money.

I saw a person on Antiques Roadshow once who bought a painting for $25 at a garage sale that was worth $50,000.

 

That sort of thing happens all the time on that show.

The story varies on why Honus Wagner cards were rare.

One story was that he didn't want to be associated with cigarettes, even though his image appeared on cigar boxes.

Another story was the printing press making his card breaking.

It depends. It might actually be better than, say, a ziploc bag, because no moisture could accumulate inside it.

I think with cards that rare, it doesn't much matter whether they're in great condition or not.

The cards were all rated 3.5 to 4.5 out of 10 which is good for 100 year old cards. So they are beat up somewhat but still worth a boatload.

Mom threw away my Topps 1963-68 cards when we moved to California in 1972. I believe I had complete sets for at least two of those years.

We did a lot of trading back then.

 

They'd be worth thousands of dollars today.

Probably because they were stuck in a paper bag and thus out of circulation.

I think you would already know this.....but your friend should continuously and furiously stroke and squeeze the bitten area until the poison is ejected.  Or have someone suck the poison out.  His choice.
