Close the campus to non students and remove anyone who does anything other than a peaceful protest.

Closing the campus is so unrealistic that I'm not sure you were even being serious. It's not a middle school. The central campus itself is like twice the size of Disneyland, probably larger. There are solutions. That's not one.

the university's student republicans at berkeley filed a federal lawsuit today re: the school providing adequate security for events that represent opposing viewpoints.

That's not exactly what the lawsuit is about, but yeah, they filed a lawsuit. I read it. I'm with them, unless there's more to the story.

Was listening to KBPK today and there was a discussion of the lawsuit from the originator that had worked for the ACLU and a representative for Berkeley. The conversation was intresting between the two viewpoints, well spoken people but the Berkeley Rep was getting murdered on the law aspect.

The only thing I can think is that traditional network/cable stations and even content providers like Netflix see the threat of how VERY tailored to specific viewers content on platforms like YouTube can be. They have decided that the one size fits all approach to programming to be an ancient relic. Hence programmers will be more and more following the cable news approach of pandering to very specific demographics. I think this will further hasten the death of TV as it seems unlikely they will be able to accomplish this as easily as online sources. I would expect more and more types of programming to become political porn. Junk food. Light on legitimate content, high on masturbatory filler.

These libs continue to not get it.  Not at all.

Doubling down on a losing hand.

I get why they do it.

A: Human nature inherently tends to make one both hostile and self centered. It's human survival instinct.
B: They see Republicans succeed by using these bullying and scare mongering tactics so it's both a direct reaction to these tactics as well as a conscious decision to fight fire with fire.

But...it's much much harder to sell what they are selling with those methods than what the Republicans are. It is one thing to rationally consider this. It is another though when you factor in natural stimulation one feels while acting out like this. But this party can only go on for so long before something breaks. The buzz is going to wear off eventually.

This is a really accurate quote, depressing as it may be.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/apr/26/uc-berkeley-far-right-speakers-free-speech-protests

Quote

Robert Cohen, a history professor at New York University who has written several books about the Free Speech Movement, said that he saw the current contretemps as a “free speech hustle”.

“The free speech tradition that people made sacrifices to win is really in tatters,” Cohen said. He blamed the devolution on the “short-sighted” reactions of the left and the “opportunistic and cynical game that these rightwingers are playing”.
