Chris Cotillo: Angels and Padres after Daniel Nava

Well in a nutshell I never believed that any of the big OF'rs were ever seriously targeted. I said that Eppler would have to get creative with trades ( shop Wilson ) and sign mid-level pieces. I said it all along that Arte won't go over the Luxury tax.

I was saying the same thing until they traded for Simmons.

You don't gut the farmsystem for a defensive specialist without plans of building a competitive roster.

This is a 3rd of 4th place team right now.

Perhaps this IS it.  It still improves LF and very inexpensively.  Maybe the plan is to go big in 2018.  Harper next to Trout in the outfield?  I'd like that look.

Between Weaver and Wilson's contracts coming off the books next year, and Hamilton's the year after, the Angels can spend for 2016 and still end up well below the tax threshold for 2018 when the FA class is shaping up to be ridiculous.

Nah. Calhoun and Richards will be making 15+ million a year..

#Angels owner Arte Moreno said "we're probably gonna be out" on Cespedes, Gordon and Upton.

Jeff Fletcher ‏@JeffFletcherOCR

Arte Moreno, on big FAs "Right now if I had to make a decision we'd probably be out."

Bill Shaikin ‏@BillShaikin

Moreno: Angels made no offer to Jason Heyward.

Um....wow

Nava or Choi could get some DH at bats vs. RHers if Cron struggles.

i just want to remind everyone that of the players that weren't starting or on the team at the end of the year, the offensive production from said players was a collective of about 80 runs below the average major league baseball player.  That's -80 runs accumulated over about 1550 (25% of the teams total PA)  plate appearances from our bench by seasons end.

Granted, guys off the bench aren't likely to perform as an average major league player, but our collective group might now.  Also, if everyone in the opening day lineup stays healthy and performs enough to keep them in there then the bench will get fewer at bats.

We essentially had two -1 WAR players playing in our lineup every single day. Imagine getting half of that back.  That would be 4 wins.  That's how bad our bench was last year.

That there is some awesome spin.

Makes absolutely zero sense. Can't save money to spend next offseason with that garbage market. Won't be finding a suitable long-term option for LF next year barring a trade with a team that has little to trade.

Looking to waste another year of Trout's prime while they have him. Nice strategy

2 years, since next year there's really nothing to improve the team with either.

Might as well trade him, honestly.

If true that sucks. I can't believe they would take this approach, it literally makes zero sense.

Honestly, if this is the approach they are gonna take, then they may as well gut the team and try to get as many high minors prospects as possible so that in 3 years they will be competitive again.  That would give us an outside chance to keep Trout for the long term.

This franchises use of resources and opportunities over the last 6-7 years has been an unmitigated colossal goat **** of a disaster.
