WAR Question

Recommended Posts

I was recently on baseball reference and I saw that Ben Molina only had a career 10.6 offensive WAR. On the other hand Mike Hampton had an offensive WAR of 8.2. Is their positions taken into account for their offensive WAR. Molina was not a beast at the plate but I have a hard time believing that Hampton accumulated nearly the same war in 4,000 less at bats. Can somebody please explain this to me?

Yes

Hampton's oWar represents about 82 runs above a typical pitcher... which is almost 0.

Molina's 10.6 is above a replacement level catcher, so significantly higher bar.

On Hampton's page we can see that he had 80 career runs created offensively, and Molina had 565.

Funny you bring this up. I was tossing back some pepsi maxx last night with the homies and it came up. Who has a better offensive WAR? B-Mo or Hampton.

Saved me a few clicks of the mouse, bro. Grac!

yeah, i stopped by your crib and your vieja told me you went to a kick-back at Casper's pad

good to hear he's finally out

WAR is weird. That HR Trout stole is worth more than what WAR will show.

If bases were loaded a HR being robbed saves 4 runs. Considering how hard it is to jump like that....

the average replacement level player certainly won't in hell be able to do that.

True, all that said though, Trout's catch will be the most valuable individual play of the season from a WAR standpoint.
