Los Angeles Angels could have had Matt Harvey, with a little more investment

We had Ryan Vogelsong in our org, but let him get away via Rule 5 to the Giants after 2010.

He then went on to win 27 games with a 3.00 ERA for the Giants in 2011-12, and help lead them to a WS title in 2012.

Granted he was 33 when the Halos DFA'd him, plus he had a nearly 2.00 WHIP and nearly 5.00 ERA for SLC in 2010.

We did draft Buster Posey in 2005, but in a very late round out of HS (upper 40s round?).

Very few if any HS recruits pass up playing baseball in college when drafted that late.

The 2010 draft didn't help Bane, granted Calhoun was drafted in the 10th round.

When you have FIVE of the top 40 picks, you HAVE to do better than Badrosian, Clarke, Bolden, and Lindsey for 4 of those picks.

Ironic, because the previous 2009 draft produced Trout, Grichuk, Skaggs, and Richards in the first 3 rounds.

that 2010 draft killed us. Anyone know some names off the top of their head who we could have had that year?

An article that points out the Angels spent well over slot for Adenhart is used as proof that Moreno pinches pennies.   Logic fail.

The moving away from the farm system is one of my biggest beefs with the Angels and it's valid, but it's hardly about penny pinching, it's more about the shift in philosophy that followed Stoneman's departure.  The Angels under Stoneman were noted for going over slot on players, particularly in the mid rounds where they offered first round money.  They were known for inking draft and follow players, were very active in Latin America, and even signed several Aussie players.   Then boom...  Fans wanted FA home run hitters and to play the same FA games the Red Sox and Yankees were famous for playing...    The fans got their wish...  Many pennies were spent and less and less money made it's way to the draft.

Careful what you wish for...

I blame Moreno not for penny pinching, but for spending his money in the wrong places..

Yep, Ward hit for a high BA at Orem and Burlington. But he had minimal XBHs.

I sure hope he can frame pitches well, work with pitchers well, throw out base stealers well, minimize WPs, and have at least a .330 OBP at the MLB level.

He's getting on base more than 40% of the time in Low A and sits at .457 for his career.   He's walked 39 times as a pro .vs 23 Ks...   Power is the last thing to come and should be the least of the Angels worries.
