and -- if not for the broken collar bone situation -- Jeff Mathis.

Look at the Angels pitching quality before and after Mathis left the team -- like night and day. CERA = not a false stat.

I'm sorry. This pitching doesn't suck because Mathis isn't here. It sucks because Butcher doesn't know what the **** he's doing.

F Mathis

Hard to believe ppl still back that guy

Dude was garbage

Thanks to Mathis being on the DL, the Marlins are the only team in MLB with a worse record than the Angels  :(

And they have Wilson, Vargas, Hanson and Blantana.

Wilson would be pitching better if someone was there to remind him to not nibble. Vargas is what he is: a career #3 pitcher. Hanson and Blanton are cheaper versions of Haren and Santana, who might be useful pitchers if we had a useful pitching coach.

We have guys in the bullpen with really good stuff who have never learned how to locate. Location is teachable, stuff isn't. They're not being taught.

Going into today only 7 teams have scored fewer runs than we have and only 4 have allowed more than we have...our problems run the full spectrum of our club. We're getting shut out by the Astros for eff sake...we're not a good offensive team either

It has absolutely nothing to do with Mathis being on the DL. It has everything to do with them just not being a good ballclub.

You can't honestly believe that Mathis is that good, can you?

Location is teachable? Butch can tell them where to throw it but its up to the guys to do it...either you have command of your stuff or you don't. Practice / bullpen sessions can help but it is not taught

It is certainly teachable, especially when dealing with arm slots and release points.

Exhibit A: Side hat.

You can teach mechanics, agreed. Not location. I pitched my entire life through college ball and never had a pitching coach teach me location. They talked to me about the importance of it and command and corrected mechanical flaws. But anyway it don't much matter in terms of this team...command nor location is a trait many of our arms enjoy

Wouldn't better mechanics help most pitchers locate better?

And someone needs to remind Wilson that he needs to trust his stuff. Butcher is incapable of even that much.
