HBO Now coming in April for $14.99 per month, Apple TV price cut to $69

Recommended Posts

apple gets you:

1 airplay: so you send anything from your iphone/ipad/mac to your tv. its worth the $99 for this alone, for $69 its a steal.

2 access to itunes

3 access to streaming sevices (like you mentioned, netfix, hulu, etc)

Most smart tvs do this. So does Chromecast and Xbox one. Not a unique feature anymore

AAPL has their own CDN - content delivery network.

It's a huge deal.

Interesting and somewhat explanatory.  But since I'm not a techie, let me see if I have this right:  Apple is basically building their own network (i.e.:  infrastructure) in which to stream anything you download/stream through your Apple TV box?  As opposed to relying strictly on the stability and quality of whatever ISP or provider you're using?

Apple doesn't control whatever ISP you're using.  Completely separate.

It's just an Apple "cable" box that uses the internet instead of coax from your local cable network/dish service.

But they are controlling their end of the equation. By building out their own infrastructure they can prioritize how the content is being streamed on their end instead of relying on companies like Akamai. They also don't have to share traffic on their end with their own tier 1 connection.

I'm guessing in the not too distant future directv will offer something similar that will include satellite wifi and pick and choose programming at a more affordable price point.

Judging by all the bandwidth that Dish has accumulated.  Might be the direction they are going in.

I have mixed feelings about Sling and the Apple tv version of packaging networks.  Kind of re-inventing the hamster wheel we've been stuck on for the last several decades.  The ultimate we all want to see is something where we each pick and choose (ala carte) what channels we receive and pay for.

This just does what cable/satellite does imo, but with far fewer channels at a lesser price:  Package networks together and sell those for a set price.

There's pretty much nothing on these planned channels I need to see on a live stream.  I can wait to see "Scandal," if I ever see it.

And I promise there will eventually be all kind of restrictions for live sports programming.
