Santiago or Shoe

Recommended Posts

I would disagree about Shoemaker having the better upside. Santiago's stuff is pretty damn good. If he ever learns to control it he could easily end up being a CJ Wilson type pitcher.

Shoemaker is the hot hand right now, but over the long run I think Santiago will be the better pitcher.

Until Santiago learns how to control his emotions better and not let his emotion dictate his pitching I gotta go with Shoe.

I think this is a good discussion to have about back end pitching. We actually have a little more depth than we thought.

The Angels are going to need both before the season is over. The only question is Santiago of more value out of the pen and keep Shoe ready for the rotation starts? I tend to lean this way, Angels could use a guy out of the pen that can do long relief and be a lock down kind of arm.

This seems to be a classic scenario where one player (Shoemaker) has a higher floor but lower ceiling than another player (Santiago). I like keeping Shoemaker in the rotation and putting Santiago in the bullpen, even see how he does in high leverage situations, perhaps grooming him to be the closer.

Weaver and Wilson go every 5th day and the other four slot in otherwise

For every 4 starts that Weaver and Wilson make, Shoe/Santi/Skaggs/Richards get 3.  You don't skip anyone in the rotation so after the off day you go to whoever was supposed to be next regardless.  So you give Weaver and Wilson a break once in awhile.  Occasionally though, there will be a week between starts, but you can also move a guy up depending on whether someone else seems fatigued, or give the guy a little work out of the pen in between starts if the situation calls for it.

But, is the player better off starting every 5 days?  Do they perform better or would the occasional rest be of benefit?
