Finding A Three-Year Deal In The New Year

"Three or more years". The "or more" is kind of important. There is absolutely no way Garza sings for 3 years or less, barring a disaster of a physical.

But there is some validity to what was in the article.  The longer into the new year it goes, the more teams fill their budget up.  That would lessen competition and thus drive down price.

I think it'll be interesting if the Tanaka run goes till Jan 24th, and Garza, Arroyo and Santana haven't signed.  That would leave 18 days for some teams between the deadline and when pitchers and catchers report for the earliest teams.  Many will be set by then.

I don't think anybody here has any problems with signing Garza at 2-3 years.

Problem is there's a better chance that Blanton and Scoscia put down the lasagna. Garza will get 4 years at the very very least (which I have no problem with if he accepts), but more likely he signs for 5 or maybe even 6 depending on how desperate teams are for a Tanaka back-up plan.

The Tanaka situation has changed the entire dynamic of this offseason.

That late posting fee definitely delayed a lot of things. I wish there were a good group of pitchers coming out in FA next year so we could feel good if we moved on. That would leave our rotation in a huge dismay and we can't afford to waste any more years being average so I could understand why we go all in on Tanaka and Garza, but it may not be the right decision in the long run.
