Angels not ruling out a 5 man rotation, Ohtani is open to it

I often wonder how much the 6-man rotation impacts potential FA pitchers from signing with the Angels... The situation seemed perfect for Thor last year coming off of surgery (might still be good for him this year) and maybe for a guy like Verlander... But I can see a lot of guys having a negative impression of it...

Ohtani proving that he can fit into a 5 man rotation will increase his value as a pitcher.

This is exactly the point.  He knows if he doesn't sign an extension, more teams will be wanting to sign him since they don't need to change their style of rotation.

Ohtani will make 60 mil a season easily in free agency.  Figure 20 for being a hitter and 40 for being a pitcher.

I think going to a 5 man rotation is a pretty bold risk for Ohtani. He's already going to get a huge contract, how much more could this really earn him? The downside is he has fatigue or injury and puts his long term pitching prospects into question.

$45-$50 million will be the max.

Can’t necessarily equate both hitting stats and pitching stats combined money wise.   No player, even Ohtani, is currently worth $60 million AAV!

Ok.  Remember this post.  IF he goes open market.  Be ready.

40 for a pitcher?  Has there ever been 40 for a pitcher?  One that hasn't won a Cy young?

call it whatever you want.

they got 33 starts from about 20m spent on Noah and Lorenzen this year.

Maybe you get another 3-4 starts out of Shohei and put him at greater risk for injury and at least fatigue.

They've got four legit rotation pieces that are probably gonna avg 25-30 starts.  So you need to fill in another 40-60.

Add a starter and that's another 25-30

They've got some high end depth to cover a portion of that in guys like Silseth, Bush, Rodriguez and Canning.   Plus you've got Barria and Davidson as well as a hodgepodge of others.

One way or another, you're gonna need 15-30 from guys outside of your top 5 starters and that's if you add a starter.

You might start the season with 5 guys in the rotation but I'd bet by the time the season is done, the combined number of start needed outside of those top 5 guys is more than any one of them make over the course of the year.

So how you divvy that up over 162 games is season management.

But realistically, no matter what you call it, it's a six man rotation.

Another way to math it out:

5 guys with 150 innings means you need another 150 innings from your starters if you're going to have a good rotation.

Those near 180 innings from Noah and Lorenzen were actually pretty important even though they were mediocre because it kept Junk, Toussaint, Diaz, Mayers, Rosenberg, Davidson and a bunch of minor league scrubs from having to fill that gap.

The rotation had some depth this year.  If they skimp on that shit then they haven't learned a single lesson.
