Mets fans send their thanks to the dumbest owner in baseball. I don’t know how he couldn’t see that Billy Eppler (who inherited a really shit situation) had really started to turn this organization around.

He brought up the farm system 10 spots from dead last. 2 huge free agent signings (Trout and Ohtani). Almost snagged Andy Pages from the dodgers before that trade was blown up. 
I miss Eppler. Happy to see he’s doing well for the Mets, but sad to think he could have been here building this team up

Remember that they are paying a pitching ace and MOTO bat.

Start at Trout’s yearly salary for 7 or 8 seasons, and then yearly innings pitched incentives?

160 innings - extra $5 million

180 innings - additional $5 million

The organization was supposed to have a reset/rebuild with Maddon and Perry.

They bailed on Maddon when the going got tough. Debatable move, but it showed impatience and frustration after just a couple of seasons. The first a weird Covid distorted tournament type situation. 

After decades of patience with Scosia they will be on their fourth full time manager in six seasons next year. Plus the sneak preview of the assistants during this Nevin suspension. 

Perry is the third GM in six years. And feeling the pressure for immediate results. Justifiably to some degree, but building a team isn't done in a year or two. And injuries do screw up the best plans of every team. Can they just fire him and search for another replacement this soon? 

At a minimum they need to let this season play out. There will be a new manager unless Nevin has a miraculous second half. A GM can't be judged on a couple of years. But if the season escalates into more of a disaster, and morale gets nasty, they may no choice but to have yet another try at getting it right. 

Whatever happens, this has to be the worst, or one of the worst phases in team history. Even with two HOF players in their prime. Hard to imagine, but there are cursed franchises in all sports. Ownership, management, coaching, injuries, bad decisions at all levels add up to create this potentially toxic situation. 

Counter intuitively, maybe patience is the better option than blowing things up again. Perry has to get some things right given more time. And they're  due to find the right manager. But then you have Ohtani's contract to deal with next year, and Trout another year older. Plus all the other usual issues.

There are other examples.

I just hope my Angels make the playoffs again before I'm 90.

Stasis still does well behind the plate, but has lost it at the plate, back to pretty much pre-2020 Stassi.

Would Arte consider re-signing Ohtani AND Syndergaard AND signing Contreras to a 3 year deal as a bridge to Quero?

Contreras catches 2/3 of the games and fills in for Walsh at 1B when needed?

He’s always been a solid offense guy and decent to solid behind the plate.

Only making $6.7 million this season

Contreras is making 9.6 million this year and is an unrestricted free agent.  A big hitting catcher will fetch a premium price and lots of teams could use a more offensive catcher so lots of competition.

F’n Baseball Reference only shows through his 2021 salary, which is where I saw the $6.7 million.

Yep, $9.7 million this season is a difference.   Need to look elsewhere then.  Was worth some research anyway.

Maybe a new hitting coach can get Stassi going again in 2023?
