Draft Signings - Angels 2013

Recommended Posts

Michael Hermosillo drafted by the Los Angels Angels of Anaheim with the 847th pick in the 28th round of the MLB Draft. The outfielder wouldn't release full terms of his contract, but did say it was worth more than $100,000 plus it guaranteed the worth of his football scholarship was paid for as well. Hermosillo was projected as a fifth to 10th-round pick, but he was told by Angels officials Thursday they likely wouldn’t draft him during those rounds Friday because they were targeting pitchers.

"I really am locked in on Texas and playing college baseball, but I'll see what the (Los Angeles) Angels have to say, and it will at the very least be great experience for down the road," he said.

Not a signing, but sounds good: “I cried like a baby at first,” Middleton said of his selection in the third round. “This is everything I ever wanted."

I see a lot of similarities between the size and stuff of Pat Corbin and Jonah Wesely.  Now this isn't to say he'll be Corbin.  The Angels minor league scouting was too stupid to realize the type of intelligent, gutsy LHP they had in Corbin when they had him, though to their credit at least they knew exactly who Tyler Skaggs was, but then again so did everyone else.  Jerry Dipoto and staff in Arizona knew Corbin had a real shot at developing into a solid, serviceable middle of the rotation type of lefty when they dealt for him.

I like Wesely's mechanics, really simple, not a ton can go wrong.  He's really strong for pitcher, really quick arm.  Most arms as strong as his are prone to violent deliveries that can charge the ball up over 95 mph but usually have a shorter lifespan.  Wesely however shows intelligence beyond that of a normal high school pitcher.  He stays within himself, doesn't over extend or get too amped.  He comfortably sits 91-92, which is good for a lefty and I can see him adding 1-2 mph in the future.  His curveball is a thing of beauty and I know little about his change up except to say that I've read it has "life" or "depth"....one of those two.

I think the Angels are wagering of his ability to live up to his potential as a solid, aggressive mid-rotation starter.
