5 157 211 Kyle McGowin  sr.png  calculator.png RHP Savannah State Ga.

"McGowin, a junior, had the option of returning to Savannah State for his senior season, but on Sunday he said he will forgo his final year of eligibility and report to the Angels’ farm system."

Yep, Kentucky has never exactly been a bastion of college baseball.

Angels need to show Green a picture of Blanton and then say...  This is what can happen if you go to UK.

Scott Downs also pitched there in college.  Only star player I can recall having gone there was Brandon Webb.

The Angels are close to signing their first selection in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, high school left-hander Hunter Green, for the slot value of $942,000.

The Angels, without a first-round pick due to the offseason signing of Josh Hamilton, took Green in the second round with the 59th-overall pick. Next week, the 17-year-old Kentucky product is expected to fly to Southern California to sign his first professional contract.

The Angels have shown under Ric Wilson so make a high degree of signings than in the past, which is a pretty good thing if you ask me.  Draft players who want to come and play that may not necessarily have the upside.  Every once in a while, you'll stumble upon a Kole Calhoun type.

Is it typical for us to sign so many of our draft choices?  Seems like we've signed all but 2 or 3.

The draft strategy they have employed under Wilson has been much less volatile.  College seniors don't have many options, College Jr's, while having the option to go back for their final season often are just ready to start their careers.   The good thing about the college route is that there typically is a lot less risk, the flipside being the reward isn't nearly as high in most cases.

Given the state of the farm system, getting as many replacement level players as possible is really a good way to go.
