Fixing the Bullpen in the Offseason

BTH

Recommended Posts

The bullpen is obviously an area of concern for the Angels. The top tier of free agent relievers this offseason include Alex Colome, Ken Giles, Shane Greene, Liam Hendriks, Blake Treinen, and Kirby Yates. Giles and Yates have been injured for most of this season, but have a track record.

Who is the best option for the Angels, and could they even add more than one top free agent reliever?

It is nice to dream of the Angels magically bringing in elite relievers and starters, but I just don't see it. More likely Eppler will try to sort through in-house relievers, starter depth, and clean peanuts. He might bring in a solid veteran or two with a good track record, but nothing like Yates. If a couple of Ohtani, Canning, Sandoval, Barria and Suarez had broken through, he'd have the luxury to sign a good reliever, but fixing the rotation comes first.

I agree that Eppler is unlikely to add any big relievers through free agency, but he may not be the GM. If there is a new GM, that person may be more inclined to sign a reliever than Eppler is.

Maybe, but we can hope that any halfway decent GM will prioritize starting pitching first. If Arte opens up the purse-strings, then you might get what you want - but only after shoring up the rotation.
