At this rate probably. It looks likely to be a thin market for starters and we don't really have any internal options to replace him.

Include a home-team discount.  His family lives in Apple Valley, within driving distance of the Big A (2 hours).  Having your family watching you pitch is a big attraction.

Who in the Angels farm is coming up to replace him?  Or which FA pitcher will come and perform similarly for the Angels for much less money?  Trade market for good starters also not so good.  

 

Vargas will be in the driver's seat for any potential deals.

It would seem to me that all it would take for him to resign is an extreme lowball offer on the part of the Angels.

Yes. Start at 5/60, go as high as 5/75. Who else are we gonna get? He's actually been our most consistent starter, and he's doing a hell of a job as a #3.

Even this year, with his overall solid numbers, he has a 4.50 ERA, 1.67 WHIP, and .314 BAA on the road and some of you guys want to give him 5/60 or 5/75? I like the guy and he's off to a good start, but it seems like some of you guys are overreacting to his past 5 starts against below average offenses (KC twice, Dodgers, CWS, Houston).

Compare his last 5 starts to any other 5 starts that any of our pitchers have had this year.

 

Keep in mind that out of his 10 starts, 7 have been quality starts, including against Texas and Baltimore.

Yes, I'd definitely re-sign him. For how much? I really can't say right now, but if he keeps on performing well throughout the year, I'm sure he'll be asking for at least a 5/60 type of contract.

Vargas isn't arb eligible after this year.  He's a free agent.  He'll be 31 to start 2014. 

 

Options will be limited on the SP front.  He got 8.5mil in his last year of arb so he'll get 4-5yrs and 12-15per.  If you can get him for 4/52, then you should do it.
