Would you resign Vargas after this year?

Recommended Posts

If the Angels don't, another team will probably come very close.

Who in the Angels farm is coming up to replace him?  Or which FA pitcher will come and perform similarly for the Angels for much less money?  Trade market for good starters also not so good.

Vargas will be in the driver's seat for any potential deals.

That's a scary thought. True, but scary.

It's still early but if so what would it take to resign him?

It would seem to me that all it would take for him to resign is an extreme lowball offer on the part of the Angels.

With that said, I'm not quite sure why you think the Angels should pursue that course of action considering how good he's actually been thus far.

His career numbers are only slightly better than Joe Saunders' career numbers. His career numbers on the road are subpar. Even this year, with his overall solid numbers, he has a 4.50 ERA, 1.67 WHIP, and .314 BAA on the road and some of you guys want to give him 5/60 or 5/75? His last 5 starts have come against below average offenses. I like the guy and he's off to a good start, but it seems like some of you guys are overreacting to his past 5 starts against below average offenses (KC twice, Dodgers, CWS, Houston).

Compare his last 5 starts to any other 5 starts that any of our pitchers have had this year.

Keep in mind that out of his 10 starts, 7 have been quality starts, including against Texas and Baltimore.

Love it when someone discounts multiple good performances by saying it was against scrubs. Nice analysis.

Give credit where credit is due.

Because our other pitchers have done SOOOOOOOOO well against those same teams.

Where's Hanson going?

Not the point.

Weaver/CJ/Vargas/Hanson/Blanton>Weaver/CJ/Hanson/Blanton/Richards or Williams. Especially when at least one of them (except Blanton) goes down for any length of time next year (and you know it will happen...Weaver's 2nd year in a row with DL time this year, and he's not getting any younger).

Vargas isn't arb eligible after this year.  He's a free agent.  He'll be 31 to start 2014.

Options will be limited on the SP front.  He got 8.5mil in his last year of arb so he'll get 4-5yrs and 12-15per.  If you can get him for 4/52, then you should do it.
